The Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) share price has had a dire 2022. Down 40% year-to-date, investor confidence surrounding the electric vehicle manufacturer has been squeezed by growing macroeconomic concerns.

However, yesterday offered a glimmer of hope as the stock rose 9%. So, is this the start of the road to recovery? And should I be buying Tesla shares today? Let’s find out.

The Tesla share price in 2022

Tesla’s trajectory over the past five years has been extraordinary. The stock has returned 845% within this period. So it’s a top performers over this timeframe. However, this year has seen a reversal of this impressive growth. One of the main reasons for this is rising inflation. Spiking rates dampen confidence in future company earnings. And with interest rates also jumping this year, these combined factors have driven the Tesla share price down.

However, yesterday saw that small revival in the stock’s price as CEO Elon Musk expanded on a statement he’d made earlier this month about cutting Tesla’s workforce. The firm had been expected to lay off 10% of its salaried employees. And while this will still be the case, Musk said yesterday that Tesla will continue to hire hourly workers. As a result, the layoffs will now add up to just 3.5% of the workforce. With investors clearly happy about this news, the stock jumped.

Other factors

While the above is clearly good news, I still have some concerns.

First, the major issue I have with Tesla is its high valuation. With a current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 98, I think Tesla is overvalued. For comparison, rival General Motors has a P/E of just 5.44. And this puts me off when I think about adding Tesla shares to my portfolio.

Another issue I have is competition. Although Tesla is an established manufacturer, as rival firms make the inevitable transition into the EV space, it may struggle to hold on to its market-leading position. This threat can already be seen with Ford, which recently made a pledge to be all-electric by 2030.

However, Tesla is still in a strong position. Despite supply chain issues, the firm managed to produce over 305,000 vehicles and deliver 310,000 of them in Q1. On top of this, revenues also increased 87% year-on-year for the period. Given the tough conditions Tesla has faced, these results show the strength of the business.

What also excites me is the opening of its gigafactory in Berlin. This move will allow the company to expand into Europe, with the factory able to produce 500,000 vehicles every year. Should the firm keep up this strong growth, I’d expect this to lead to a rise in the Tesla share price.

Should I buy?

Tesla’s growth has been impressive. And the announcement by Musk yesterday could be the start of the stock’s revival. However, I won’t be buying Tesla shares today. The firm faces too many challenges for me. And with competition set to heat up, I’m going to hold off buying for the time being.

It’s no secret that Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has made monumental gains in recent periods. Although past performance is not a reliable indicator for future performance, of course, its share price is up 1,500% over the past five years as its CEO Elon Musk has led the firm in its rise to a $1trn company.

The stock is currently trading for just below $1,000. So, should I be buying shares in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer? Let’s explore.

Tesla’s positive Q1

Late last week Tesla released its Q1 results. And there were plenty of positives to take away. Within the period, the firm produced over 305,000 EVs and delivered 310,000, despite ongoing supply chain issues. It also managed to increase revenues by 87% from the same period a year ago, while gross profit increased a substantial 132%. Given the tough economic conditions the firm has faced, such as limited production at the firm’s Shanghai factory, these are impressive results.

What I also like about Tesla is the ambition of Musk. The company anticipates growing its rate of deliveries at 50% for a number of years ahead. And this will be boosted by the recent opening of its gigafactory in Berlin. The factory will aid Tesla’s expansion into Europe and will produce 500,000 vehicles and millions of battery cells every year. If this growth continues, it’s hard to see the share price slowing down any time soon.

Musk also recently promised that Tesla’s robotaxi will be ready by 2024. The vehicle will have no wheels or pedals, and Musk has reiterated the vehicle will be focused on creating the lowest cost-per-mile price. This could provide a huge boost for Tesla’s growth in the near future. However, it must be noted that Musk has failed to deliver on deadlines numerous times, putting the 2024 target in doubt.

Tesla concerns

One major concern for me is competition. While Tesla has shown its resilience over the past few years, as established manufacturers dive deeper into the EV space, this may Tesla’s dominant position in the market. For example, rival Volkswagen has been making headway in EVs. And it poses a large threat to Tesla’s European sales.

Please note, investing in stocks and shares puts your capital at risk, and Tesla’s high valuation is of further concern to me. With a current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 134, it’s easy to see it as overvalued. For context, General Motors has a P/E of 5.95. When looking to buy Tesla shares, this overvaluation is a deterrent for me.

Should I be buying?

Tesla’s latest results show that despite its doubters, it seems to able to continue growing. In a period plagued with supply chain issues, its delivery numbers are also impressive. Further, continuous rising revenue is a tempting factor when considering buying shares.

However, its overvaluation concerns me. And despite its strength in the EV space, I think we could begin to see this undermined in the years ahead as more manufacturers make the inevitable transition into the sector. Yet while I won’t be buying Tesla shares today, they’re most certainly on my watchlist for the near future.

While CEO Elon Musk’s recent investment in Twitter has been stealing the headlines, in the background Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares have slowly been grinding away. Despite a slow start to 2022, the last month has seen a 28% rise in the share price. And as a result, the stock recently broke through the $1,000 barrier once again.

So, will we continue to see Tesla shares rising in the months ahead? And should I be adding the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to my portfolio? Let’s find out.

Tesla shares rise

There are a few reasons why the stock has seen a recent jump. One of these is the opening of Tesla’s first European gigafactory. Opened in late March in Germany, the long-awaited factory will help support the firm’s expansion into Europe. It’s expected to produce 500,000 vehicles and millions of battery cells every year.

In line with this, in early April Tesla released its latest set of delivery results. For Q1, Tesla delivered 310,048 vehicles. This represents a major jump from the 184,800 delivered in the same period last year. This is all the more impressive, considering the supply chain issues it has been facing. Based on these numbers, its clear to see why Tesla shares have jumped.

Tesla concerns

Yet, despite these impressive figures, I do have a few concerns with Tesla.

The first of these is its high valuation. Tesla’s current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is an extortionate 215. There is no doubting this places Tesla as seriously overvalued. For comparison, General Motors has a P/E of just 5.78.

On top of this, the firm also faces a variety of problems in the near future. Despite the impressive delivery results, Tesla is set to continue to face supply chain issues in the months ahead. And as the cost of living continues to rise, this may impact future sales as people shy away from making purchases. In the current economic conditions, people also deter away from growth stocks, in part due to their volatility. Should investors begin to offload Tesla shares, the price will take a hit.

Further, while there is no doubting that Tesla always has one eye on the future, so does its competition. Many established manufacturers have been venturing into the EV space as the transition to electric seems to be inevitable. For example, Ford recently pledged to be all-electric by 2030. And it’s beginning to take strides towards this through the $1bn transformation of its Berlin site. Should these firms be successful in their moves, Tesla may not enjoy the large market share it currently has in times ahead.

Will the rise continue?

Despite the strong Q1 numbers, I’m not too sure Tesla shares will be able to keep up the impressive performance. The business will potentially face massive headwinds in the month ahead. And its high valuation steers me away from the stock. Because of this, I won’t be buying Tesla shares today.

Elon Musk is now the biggest shareholder in Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) following a $2.9bn investment in the company’s shares. His 9.2% stake eclipses those of institutional investors, such as Vanguard and BlackRock. Musk has also joined the board of directors. With the share price surging on the news, let’s explore where the social media stock could go next and whether it would be a good buy for me.

Reversing a downward trend in the Twitter share price?

Since reaching $77.06 per share in February 2021, Twitter stock has declined dramatically over the past year. The share price has traded below $40 for most of 2022. However, Elon Musk’s recent involvement brought it above $50 again in the stock’s largest intra-day gain since Twitter’s IPO in 2013.

Yet fundamental challenges remain. Twitter has posted a net profit for only two years in the past decade. In 2021, the company paid out $809.5m to settle a shareholder class action lawsuit alleging that executives, including former CEO Jack Dorsey, concealed information regarding its slowing user growth.

Musk’s arrival on the board heralded an initial reversal in the share price, but there are question marks over whether this can be sustained.

A potential shake-up for Twitter’s policies

Despite being an avid Tweeter, Elon Musk has been a notable critic of the microblogging site. For instance, he recently admonished Twitter’s development of profile pictures linked to non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Moreover, on 25 March, Musk polled his Twitter followers to ask whether the social media network rigorously adhered to the principle that “free speech is essential to a functioning democracy“. Over 70% voted no.

Musk intriguingly stated that “the consequences of this poll will be important.” So, big changes may be on the horizon for the company’s policies, which could have potential implications for the share price.

Indeed, many Republicans are already lobbying Musk for the reinstatement of former US President Donald Trump on the platform. Twitter has banned Trump since the storming of the Capitol in January 2021.

However, Musk doesn’t have a controlling stake and there are 11 other directors on the board. Their support will be critical to enact any future changes. Accordingly, investors may be overly optimistic about the influence the world’s richest man will have on the Twitter share price.

Is now a good time to buy Twitter shares?

For me, while Elon Musk’s involvement is good news for current shareholders in the short term due to increased publicity and speculation about his future plans, I am sceptical that the Twitter share price will benefit longer term.

I suspect Musk’s primary loyalty will remain with Tesla. He’s also the CEO of SpaceX and Neuralink. As a self-professed “free speech absolutist“, the multi-billionaire’s ambitions for Twitter may not be primarily motivated by financial concerns.

I’m also not convinced Musk’s arrival on the board will be enough to rescue Twitter’s struggling business model. The company lost nearly $1.4bn over the past two years, in stark contrast to profitable competitors, such as Meta.

If I owned Twitter stock, I would take profits from the recent rise in the Twitter share price. However, I’m not a shareholder and, for me, this is not an attractive entry point to buy Twitter shares.

However, since then the electric vehicle (EV) giant’s shares have tumbled almost 32%, currently sitting at $838. What’s more, in 2022 alone the shares are down 30%.

In an uncertain economic environment, do Tesla shares have what it takes to climb back above $1,000 during 2022? And as such, should I be considering adding the shares to my portfolio? Let’s take a closer look.

Reason for November price jump

The main reason why Tesla shares skyrocketed in November was due to a partnership announcement with Hertz. The car rental giant said it would be buying 100,000 Tesla vehicles to add to its fleet throughout 2022, which is expected to equate to a healthy $4.2bn for Tesla. This injection of cash throughout the year should help Tesla deliver more solid results.

In addition to this, in September 2021, the firm’s Model 3 sedan topped total new car sales in Europe, becoming the first fully electric vehicle in history to do so.

Growth in 2022

On 26 January 2022, Tesla released its 2021 Q4 results. Revenues came in at $15.9bn, up 71% year on year. In addition to this, profits rose an astounding 118% compared to Q4 2020, with margins rising over 6% in the process. Tesla is also in a great spot financially, with $17.6bn cash and negligible debts.

Although these results were extremely encouraging, Tesla shares dropped over 10% in the days after their release. This was largely due to wider issues concerning supply problems after Tesla affirmed that its “own factories have been running below capacity for several quarters as supply chain became the main limiting factor, which is likely to continue through 2022”. These supply issues are likely to be a threat to Tesla shares climbing back to $1,000.

Why I am not a fan of Tesla shares

It’s no secret that the Tesla share price is high and heavily overvalued, especially when considering its fundamentals. Tesla shares currently trade on a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 171. For context, good value stocks usually trade on P/E ratios of under 10.

With such a high valuation comes volatility. As my fellow Fool, Cliff D’Arcy mentioned, between March 13 and March 20 back in 2020, the stock moved by over 12% every day, primarily due to high volume options trading. I’d be lying if I said this volatility didn’t worry me.

In addition to this, rising global interest rates are placing big pressure on growth stocks. When rates rise, people turn away from riskier investments, and hence valuations drop. For context, the S&P 500 Growth, a high-growth index, has dropped almost 15% in 2022. With Tesla’s high valuation and volatile price movements, I think interest rates pose a real threat to the shares.

Overall, I am sceptical about whether Tesla shares will be able to climb back above $1,000, especially considering supply chain shortages and the threat of rising interest rates. Although the firm continues to see great results, I think those broader factors outweigh any positives. Therefore, I won’t be adding any Tesla shares to my portfolio today.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) stock could be worth watching today after yesterday’s after-hours update on trading. Do some really encouraging numbers, coupled with a substantial fall in its share price in 2022 to date, suggest the company is a bargain?

“Breakthrough year”

Having been accused of running on empty for so long, there can be no doubt that the US giant is now a consistently profitable company. Following a stonking 71% increase in sales to $53.8bn, Tesla brought in $5.5bn in earnings last year. The latter was up almost 59% on 2020 ($3.47bn).

All told, Tesla delivered 936,000 vehicles in 2021 — almost double what it achieved in the previous year. Sales in Q4 also rose to 306,800 vehicles, highlighting just how quickly demand for electric vehicles is growing. No wonder it labelled 2021 as a “breakthrough year” for the company.

Of course, one should only put so much weight on these figures. To make money on Tesla stock from here, I need to know what the outlook is like.

Perhaps the most striking announcement last night was the Texas-based company’s belief that it will grow sales “comfortably above 50%” this year. That’s despite Tesla, like all car manufacturers, being impacted by the ongoing shortage of semiconductors as a result of demand spiking over the pandemic.

Whether it can actually hit this target is open to debate. However, the prospect of its Austin factory coming on-line soon bodes well. Although still awaiting a permit to deliver vehicles in Europe, it’s only a matter of time before Tesla’s new factory in Berlin is also operational.

So, is Tesla stock now a buy?

Based on last night’s update, I think the 22% fall in 2022 so far looks overdone. The prospect of a more affordable model hitting the roads in 2023 should also attract those previously put off by the price tag of its vehicles. Tesla’s finances look strong too, with cash at $17.6bn at the end of the year and minimal debt.

On the flip side, those ongoing supply chain issues will take a while to correct. Quicker-than-expected interest rate rises could also push more investors to abandon growth stocks — regardless of quality — and focus instead on those that could stage a post-pandemic recovery. They may not be as sexy as Tesla but financials, energy and travel companies may be in greater demand as we move through 2022.

As impressive as his record of proving critics wrong is, CEO Elon Musk also strikes me as a Marmite CEO. You either love his maverick nature or you consider it a liability. Regardless, one does need to be comfortable knowing that a casual tweet from Tesla’s leader can be sufficient to move the needle in either direction.

An alternative solution

Global markets remain volatile. As such, I’m still content to get exposure via FTSE 100 member Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust for now. Based on its most recent factsheet, just over 5% of assets are tied up in the electric vehicle maker. Naturally, this means I won’t get the full benefit if Tesla stock jumps. However, nor will I suffer much if the price keeps falling.

Notwithstanding this, I do think Tesla’s share price movements over the next few weeks will serve as a useful way of gauging market sentiment. And while I still don’t consider it a bargain today, my hand may be forced if the sell-off continues.

Headlines in 2021 have frequently seen the mention of electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA). Whether it be due to controversial CEO Elon Musk, or record deals such as the one recently struck with Hertz, Tesla has most certainly been in the spotlight.

The Tesla share price is up nearly 30% year-to-date. And, after reaching the $1,000 mark it now finds itself hovering around $930. So, with a new year upon us, what will 2022 have in store for the EV stock? Let’s take a look.

Tesla share price so far

Compared to the near 700% rise we witnessed last year, 2021 has represented a slowing down in the growth of the Tesla share price. The stock entered the year trading for $730 and got off to a strong start – up 15% by the turn of January. However, these gains were cancelled out as February saw 14% skimmed off the share price. This fall continued from March to mid-May. However, since then we have seen a slow and steady rise.

Towards the end of the year, the Tesla share price rocketed. Late October saw it surge above the $1,000 mark – making the EV firm only the sixth US company to hit a market capitalisation of over $1trn. Yet, after hitting a 52-week high of $1,243, the stock has fallen off.

So, where next?

Well, this depends on a few factors. One reason I think the Tesla share price could thrive in 2022 is that the firm is set to continue with its impressive growth. Tesla is set to launch its much-anticipated electric truck, along with the opening of new factories. Profits are expected to rise 40% for the year, while the firm is expected to sell over 1.5m vehicles. If these predictions are met, a rise in the Tesla share price is more than likely.

However, one concern for me is competition. As my colleague Stuart Blair highlighted, as the sector continues to grow, more and more manufacturers will venture over to the EV space. This includes Ford, which aims to move all-electric by 2030. It further includes Toyota, which recently announced it would be investing $35bn into EV production. This could impact the large grip Tesla currently has on market share, negatively impacting the stock’s price.

Should I buy?

It’s clear to see Tesla has the potential to prosper in 2022. The EV pioneer is on track to continue with its impressive growth, be it through new vehicle models or factory expansion. Based on this, I would be keen to buy Tesla stock. However, what is of major concern to me is the competition it will face in 2022. While Tesla currently enjoys domination over the EV sector, it is unclear how much of a threat more established vehicle manufacturers will pose as they venture into Tesla’s territory. Due to this, while I like Tesla, I intend to keep it on my watchlist for the time being.

Since 2016, the gain is over 2,700%.

Sadly, I’m not one of those shareholders, aside from my holding via Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust. Should I be taking a leap of faith and buying the shares myself?

Tesla stock: worth the risk?

There’s certainly no shortage of reasons for thinking the Tesla share price can continue ascending. The company has quickly become the poster child of the electric vehicle revolution. And thanks to the headlines generated by Cop26, our adoption of these cars may be even swifter than previously thought.

Despite past concerns, the company’s financial situation is clearly improving as well. Tesla’s latest Q3 update revealed a 57% rise in revenues to $13.8bn. Net income also hit $1.62bn — almost 400% higher than over the same period in 2020.

Having said this, it’s also not hard to find reasons — both general and specific — for steering clear.

Even though there’s no rule to say they can’t keep rising, US stock valuations are looking very frothy indeed. And with businesses across the globe struggling with supply chain disruption and higher costs, the risk/reward trade-off looks increasingly unfavourable for tech stocks in particular.

Musk’s behaviour also continues to raise eyebrows. Only today, it was confirmed that the visionary leader had sold $5bn of shares in his own company after conducting a poll on Twitter. This move has worried investors and helps to explain why Tesla stock has fallen 13% in value in the last five trading days.

Naturally, Musk won’t care. As a Fool with finite capital, I can’t afford to be so relaxed.

Better buy?

Of course, Tesla isn’t the only way of getting exposure to the automotive industry. Actually, I think online marketplace Auto Trader (LSE: AUTO) might offer a far more comfortable ride.

Today, the FTSE 100 member announced it had achieved its best-ever set of six-monthly revenue and profits figures. At £215.4m, the former was 82% above that achieved over the same period in 2020. It was also 15% above that logged in the year before the pandemic struck. Helped by record spending by retailers, operating profit soared 121% to £151.7m, with margin rebounding to a staggering 70%.

While Tesla’s crown may slip eventually, I’d say AUTO’s ongoing dominance looks more assured. Today, it reported a 14% increase in ‘cross-platform minutes per month’ to 633 million. This represents over 75% of the whole market. Put another way, car buyers spend almost nine times more time on Auto Trader’s site compared to its nearest competitor.

One for the traders

Taking all this into account, it’s perhaps no surprise that the AUTO share price soared over 11% in early trading, justifying my bullish call last month.

While this pales in comparison to Tesla’s recent performance, the fact that the £6bn-cap’s business model is based on recurring revenues lends it far better visibility, in my view. What’s more, the company’s ability to serve all vehicle buyers gives it a defensiveness that Musk’s company lacks.

Chuck in consistently high returns on capital and a bullet-proof balance sheet and I continue to regard AUTO as a great UK growth share. As superb as returns have been, I’ll leave Tesla stock to the traders. But I’d buy AUTO.

Up 68% year-to-date, and 180% over the past 12 months, it would be a struggle to find a better-performing stock than Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) in recent times. Tesla stock has risen 58% in the past month alone, and as a result, the firm now has a market capitalisation of over $1trn.

With divided opinions of where the Tesla share price is heading next, would now be a good time for me to add the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to my portfolio? Let’s take a look.

Hertz agreement

One of the major factors for the recent share price spike was a landmark agreement with rental company Hertz. In October, Hertz announced that it was expanding its fleet of EVs by initially placing an order of 100,000 Teslas by the end of 2022. Tesla stock jumped 12.6% last week as a result.

High demand for Tesla vehicles is no surprise, as seen by its Q3 results that were released late last month. The company saw record deliveries in the third quarter, with over 240,000 EVs delivered. The firm also produced 237,823 vehicles within the period, a 64% increase from the same period the year before.

The impressive results do not stop there. Q3 saw the firm achieve its best-ever net income, operating profit and gross profit. Earnings per share ($1.86) also beat expectations. For a potential investor like me, these are positive signs.

Should I buy?

With that said, I do have concerns about investing in Tesla stock. A major current issue is global supply chain issues. CEO Elon Musk said these issues have caused “insane difficulties” for the firm. This means demand could struggle to be met in the future, which could lead to a fall in share price.

Musk also tweeted that the firm has “far more demand than production”. And, he later stated that no contract had yet been signed between Tesla and Hertz. The fact Musk has had to come out and say this, and the current confusion surrounding the Hertz agreement, are off-putting factors for me.

Another issue is valuation, as my fellow Fool Edward Sheldon analysed recently. Already at a high valuation, my concerns are reinforced through the fact insiders have been selling their stock. Hundreds of millions worth of stock were sold by current and former board members as it hit the $1,000 mark. This more than likely suggests that they deem the stock overvalued right now.

So, while I have pointed out the positive with Tesla stock right now, there are too many issues for me to say I would buy the shares. The global supply chain issue could cause major problems, and any hint of further shortages could send the share price plummeting.

Valuation is also a major issue for me, and although the firm continues to churn out impressive results quarter-on-quarter, insiders selling stock is a red flag. I like Tesla, but just not right now. As such, I intend to keep it on my watchlist for the foreseeable future.
